April 7, 2017 – On Wednesday evening, Cecil County Public Schools announced that Mr. Travon Morgan, a language arts teacher at Perryville Middle School, was selected as the 2017 Cecil County Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made at the annual Teacher of the Year Gala held at Rising Sun Banquet Hall to a crowd of 300 attendees. Mr. Morgan was one of fifteen candidates representing schools from across the county. He is currently in his tenth year of teaching, all of which have been spent in Cecil County. The event was sponsored by APG Federal Credit Union. “This event is an opportunity to celebrate outstanding teachers across our county who are represented each year by nominees who exhibit the very heart of public education,” stated Superintendent D’Ette Devine. “We are proud to have Travon as our Cecil County representative as he moves forward to the state-level process,” stated Dr. Devine. “He creates a classroom environment that is welcoming and engaging for each of his students, creating an atmosphere that is truly student-centered.” Nominees participated in a process that closely aligns to that of the State Teacher of the Year selection process. Nominated teachers complete a written application, participate in a Meet & Greet where they give a prepared speech to the reception attendees and selection committee, and participate in an interview with the selection committee. Mr. Morgan will now move forward to compete in the Maryland Teacher of the Year process.
