Perry Point Veterans Museum at the Grist Mill To Open Veterans Day 2017 The VA Maryland Health Care System is opening a new Veterans Museum in the historic Grist Mill on the campus of the Perry Point VA Medical Center. The Grist Mill, which was built around 1750 on the shores of the Susquehanna River, is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the oldest known structures in the entire VA system.
The museum is dedicated to the rich history of the Perry Point peninsula. Once used as the hunting grounds by the Susquehannock Indians, it later served as a large estate for early settlers. During the Civil War, the property was occupied by the Union Government as a training station for cavalry mules.
Due to its strategic location, Perry Point was purchased by the U.S. Government in 1918 and leased to the Atlas Powder Company to produce ammonium nitrate during World War I. Following the war, Perry Point began a long history of serving the health care needs of U.S. military veterans. Two events will mark the opening of the new museum. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Thursday, November 9, at 11 a.m. for a small group of invited guests, (including the Mayor of Perryville), supporters of the museum, and VA Maryland Health Care System employees and volunteers.
On Saturday, November 11, the museum’s grand opening will be held from 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for the general public. Since November 11 is Veterans Day, all Veterans who attend the grand opening will receive a special pin, and refreshments will served as a tribute to the men and women who have served our country in uniform. Members of the media are welcome to attend both events.
