Chesapeake City voters will go to the polls on December 4 to choose a new Mayor.
There are two candidates for the office. Harry Sampson is currently on the Town Council. Richard Taylor, III, is a former member of the town Council.
Current Mayor, Dean Geracimos, announced he was resigning from office several weeks ago. His resignation becomes official on the day of the election.
In the meantime, the County Council has been working through a process to change the town Charter to reduce the power of the office of Mayor in the town.
Charter Amendment Resolution No. 2017-11 would require Council approval for the appointment of the Town Treasurer, require the Mayor to submit a budget to the Council at least 90 days before the beginning of the fiscal year.and authorizes a designated Town Council member to countersign checks.
Charter Amendment Resolution No. 2017-11A transfers the power to appoint and remove officers and employees of the town government from the Mayor to the town Council.
