Even as Elkton was struggling to get their footing offensively against North East at Rullo Stadium at the University of Delaware Monday night, their stalwart defense was in the process of posting their eighth shutout. When the offense got rolling, the Golden Elks brought home their 10th straight win of the season with a 2-0 victory.
“I think we kinda came out really flat. Not sure what the atmosphere was, but it wasn’t a positive one. We kinda had a little kumbaya and told ourselves we have to pick it up if we want to keep our record and especially if we want to win this game,” said the Golden Elk’s Erin DePaul, while trying to figure a reason for Elkton’s sluggish start. “North East put up a really good fight so we had to come back and come back a little harder. Our field is weedy and has bumps and hills, so this was perfectly smooth, kinda like playing on concrete so it was a big adjustment for a lot of us and everyone on the field.”
DePaul scored both goals for the Golden Elks. Her first goal came on a penalty stroke with 25:39 left in the matchup to give Elkton a 1-0 lead. With 15:48 left, DePaul took a pass from Maddie Rzucidlo and snapped the shot into the cage to give the Golden Elks an insurance goal and a 2-0 lead.
“We don’t take any team lightly even if we had beaten them before in previous years.Every game is a brand new team to us,” said DePaul. “We come in and want to sweep the county and sweep our record, 14-0 is our goal. We go hard as much as we can.
This year has been a whirlwind for first-year coach Renee Dunn. “This season has just been incredible. They have worked so hard. From day one they have worked really really hard. Every game they show up, we started a little bit slow today but we weren’t really thrilled about, but they were able to pull it out and work really hard,” said Dunn, while trying to avoid using the “U-word” with regard to their record. “We really don’t look at it that way, we look at how well we have done and take it one game at a time.We don’t think one loss is gonna ruin the season. We are thankful for every win we do get.We don’t ever say “our record”, it happens sometimes that teams don’t show up and we could be that team one day.We play every minute every second of every game.”
